Sometimes the cigars that look like they’d put hair on your chest end up being the smoothest smokes of the lot. The Perla Del Mar Corojo Double Toro is that cigar. It's large 6x60 format suggests something heavy and overpowering, but this one smokes far more refined than its size would have you believe.

The soft box press sits comfortably in the hand and its angles feel slightly slimmer on the draw than a traditional 60 ring gauge. Despite, or perhaps due to this slimness, it delivers thick, cool smoke without becoming overwhelming. Construction throughout is excellent, with an easy draw and a slow, even burn that barely needs attention once lit.

Flavour wise, this cigar remains dynamic without ever losing balance. Early on there’s a noticeable spice alongside dry leather and roasted coffee notes. As the cigar settles in, sweeter flavours begin to emerge, dark chocolate, warm cedar and subtle saffron that gives the smoke an aromatic and full quality.

What we particularly enjoy is how smooth the smoke remains despite the amount of flavour on offer. The spice gradually softens through the middle third, allowing creamier coffee and sweeter tobacco notes to take over, while the final section develops a richer, slightly earthy finish without becoming harsh or bitter.

For such a large cigar, it smokes surprisingly elegantly. There’s enough complexity here to keep experienced smokers interested, but the smoothness and balance make it approachable for almost anyone.

Cigar Aficionado gave it an 87/100, while we agree; what the hell do we know about cigars.
