Created to mark the 80th birthday of José Orlando Padrón, this cigar sits firmly in the ultra premium super special occasion smoke category (or everyday smoke if you're very wealthy). It’s the first perfecto ever released by the brand, and it shows in both its shape and its reputation. It is, for lack of a better word, perfecto.
The presentation is immediately striking. A dark, oily Nicaraguan maduro wrapper with a rugged, aged character wraps a perfectly box-pressed perfecto format. It feels dense in the hand, with no soft spots (obviously), and the dual banding, classic Serie 1926 alongside the gold “80 Years” emblem, reinforces its status as something deliberately limited and highly crafted.
The draw is open and controlled, producing thick, rich smoke with very little effort. Construction is excellent throughout, with a slow, steady burn and an ash that holds firm. This is a cigar built for patience and reflection not speed or nicotine fulfilment.
From the outset, the flavour profile is deep and unmistakably Padrón. There’s an immediate hit of espresso and dark cocoa, quickly joined by toasted nuts and a dry cedar backbone. A subtle citrus like lift appears in the background, preventing the darker notes from becoming too heavy.
As it develops, the cigar reveals its real strength: balance. The chocolate and coffee core becomes smoother and more integrated, while leather and baking spice begin to emerge in the midsection. There’s a steady black pepper presence running underneath everything, adding structure rather than aggression.
The final third leans more earthy and leathery, with lingering coffee and nutty sweetness returning on the finish. Despite its full nicotine strength, it maintains control all the way through, never tipping into harshness.
This is not a cigar that relies on surprise transitions or dramatic shifts. Instead, it delivers a consistent, layered evolution built on refinement, strength and depth of flavour.
Ultimately, it stands as one of the most iconic releases in the Padrón portfolio, combining power with polish in a way very few cigars manage at this size and strength level.
Cigar Aficionado gave it a 96/100, damn near perfect
